The History of Open LMS

Open LMS has a rich history rooted in innovation and a deep commitment to open-source technology. Our story began with the birth of Moodle™ in 2002, and the establishment of Moodlerooms in 2005 by a group of educators dedicated to enhancing online education. In 2008, we pioneered the transition to a SaaS model, ensuring uninterrupted online learning experiences and allowing institutions to focus on educational outcomes.

Our global expansion continued with the acquisition of Moodlerooms by Blackboard in 2012, followed by the integration of Netspot and Nivel Siete, which extended our reach across the Asia-Pacific and Latin American markets. In 2020, Learning Technologies Group acquired Blackboard Open LMS, rebranding it as Open LMS and further strengthening our global presence with the addition of eCreators in Australia and eThink Education in North America.

Today, Open LMS stands as the world’s largest open-source LMS provider, supported by a dedicated team of professionals, world-renowned product partners, and a global network of channel partners.
