Organized by Medical Science Consulting with the sponsorship of AstraZeneca and the participation of experts from seven scientific societies, DiabeteMo2 is a comprehensive platform for Spanish-speaking professionals involved in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of this disease.
Open LMS was chosen as the learning management system provider for the project on the strength of its proven accessibility and reliability. The course is accredited by the Commission for the Continuing Education of Health Professionals of the Valencian Community.
How DiabeteMo2 Learners Are Evaluated
DiabeteMo2 consists of three main blocks, each focused on a different patient profile:
- Prevention: Both of the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and complications after diagnosis
- Complications: Management of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and the complications that may arise.
- Frailty: Care of frail and elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
This course aims to provide content on other special interest areas, in addition to offering students access to the latest developments in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. For example, it addresses the importance of nutrition in the development of personalized diets. Additionally, it attempts to promote awareness of challenges posed by the therapeutic process, as well as the importance of doctor-patient communication.
The Context for DiabeteMo2
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), approximately 62 million people in Latin America have diabetes (422 million people worldwide). Diabetes was the sixth leading cause of death in the Americas in 2019. An estimated 244,084 deaths (1.5 million worldwide) were caused directly by this disease.
According to estimates given by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), there are approximately six million people with diabetes in Spain (where DiabeteMo2 was created). This figure has increased by more than half during the last 10 years. Consequently, Spain has the second highest number of patients with this pathology in Europe. In addition, Spain ranks as one of the top ten countries worldwide in terms of healthcare spending on diabetes. This spending reaches 13.43 billion Euros, according to the 10th Edition of the IDF Diabetes Atlas.
Both the number of cases and the prevalence of diabetes have increased steadily over the past few decades. DiabeteMo2 was born from a need in different societies to continue to improve the training of type 2 diabetes mellitus healthcare professionals. By developing a digital and accessible proposal through Open LMS, this course represents a great contribution to the prevention, care and timely response to this disease.
